Here you will find all the information VMP has to offer in regards to tuning, datalogging, and general use of the SCT device and software.

When calling into SCT for support, you can expedite the process by having your device, laptop, vehicle and good internet connection readily available.

HOW TO LOAD A TUNE FILE TO YOUR SCT DEVICE

If you bought your SCT device separately from the VMP custom tune, your tune file will be sent to you via email. The tune file will need to be loaded to your SCT device before it can be loaded to your vehicle.
You can load your tune file to your SCT device by:

  1. Download and save the .CEF tune file from the email chain that you have with your calibrator

  2. Connect the SCT device to your computer using the provided USB cable
    *Note, other cables can be used but they must be a data cable capable of transferring files - not just charging*

  3. Open the SCT Device Updater Program

  4. Select "Load Custom Tune File" from the menu of the Device Updater Program.

  5. Click "Browse" from the top right corner of the program

  6. Navigate to the location where you've saved .CEF tune file, and click "Open"

    • You will see the name of the file appear under the "Available Tunes" list

  7. Click the >> Add to Device button

    • You will see the name of the file appear under the "On Device" list

  8. Click "Program" to begin loading the file to your device

  9. Once complete, you can now load the tune file to your vehicle

HOW TO LOAD A TUNE FILE TO YOUR VEHICLE

If you bought your SCT device from VMP in the same order as your custom tune, your tune file may have been loaded to your SCT device before it had shipped out.
You can load the tune file directly to your vehicle by:

  1. Plug SCT device into the OBD2 port of the vehicle using the OBD2 cable provided

  2. Turn the key to the ON position. Do not start the engine

  3. Select "PROGRAM VEHICLE" on the main menu of the SCT device

  4. Read and follow the prompts on the screen

  5. Navigate down to highlight and select the VMP Tune File

    • ** It is important that you flash the VMP custom tune file and not the preloaded tunes that come in the SCT device.
      **Your VMP custom tune will be displayed in your device with the following naming format: Fuel Octane VMP MM/DD/YYYY
      EXAMPLE: 93 VMP 01/01/0101

  6. Click the right arrow on the device to highlight and select the "Approve" option

  7. Confirm the information on the screen reflects the VMP tune, and select "Continue"

  8. Continue to follow the prompts on the screen until the screen displays "DOWNLOAD COMPLETE"

  9. Turn the car off, and allow the ECU to completely power down before starting the vehicle.

Datalogging your vehicle allows your tuner to see ECU parameters in real time and make tuning adjustments accordingly.
A good datalog will help your tuner address concerns and verify proper vehicle operation.

The following is IMPORTANT when datalogging:

  • Using the necessary parameters

    • This is CRUCIAL when addressing concerns. VMP offers configuration files that will layout the needed parameters for many vehicle platforms.

  • Preferred naming convention of datalog file
    Please name your file with this naming convention:

      • LAST NAME - FUEL BEING USED - TYPE OF LOG - D ATE - SCT DEVICE SERIAL NUMBER.CSV
        Example) Smith-93Octane-IdleSlowRev-01012020-X4111222333.CSV

  • International Customers
    Laptops must have the Time & Language settings set to certain configuration in order for us to be able to open / review datalogs

      • Country/Region should be set to "United States"

      • Regional Format should be set to "English (United States)"

      • Time Zone should be set to "Eastern Time (US & Canada)"

      • Language should be set to "English (United States)"

  • Important Notes:

    • Please have gone through at least (2) consecutive tanks of one type of fuel before logging

    • Please turn off the air conditioning and defrost before starting your recording.

LIVELINK - STEP BY STEP DATALOGGING INSTRUCTIONS THROUGH A LAPTOP

What you will need:

  • Windows Laptop

  • SCT Livelink GENII Datalogging Software : Click HERE to download Livelink

  • SCT Device Updater Software : Click HERE to download Device Updater

STEP 1) Downloading the SCT datalogging software and the VMP configuration (.cf4) file - Video Time Stamp 0:29

STEP 2) Connecting the SCT device cables - Video Time Stamp 0:56

Open the Livelink datalogging software. Plug the Micro USB cable into the laptop and the bottom of the SCT device, and the OBD2 cable into the OBD2 port and the top of the SCT device.

STEP 3) Checking Device Communications - Video Time Stamp 1:16

Start the vehicle's engine, and click the Comm button located in the Settings menu at the top of the screen.

Once on the Communications screen, click the Check Communication button.

* If the device and vehicle do not communicate, disconnect all the cables and reconnect. Verify that you're using the USB cable that came with the SCT device. *

STEP 4) Loading the configuration (.cf4) file - Video Time Stamp 1:33

Once communication is established, click the Load Config at the top in the Chart Gauges menu.

STEP 5) Starting the datalog recording - Video Time Stamp 1:46

Once the vehicle is up to operating temperature, click the button that is shaped like an SCT device with a green circle on it. It is located on the top left of the screen.

Step 6) Recording the requested datalogs - Video Time Stamp 2:10

Your calibrator will request datalogs based on the conditions they are wanting to see.

Types of Datalogs:

Please perform ONLY the datalogs requested by your tuner - below are examples of the datalogs you may be requested to perform.

  • Idle / Slow Rev Datalog:

Allow the vehicle to get up to operating temperature. The vehicle should idling in neutral/park for a few minutes before this log is performed.
Start the datalog and allow the vehicle to idle for 30 seconds, then slowly rev the vehicle up to ~100 RPM before redline, and then let off the pedal to allow the vehicle to return to idle.

The rev should be a smooth transition, with steady pedal input all the through the RPM range before letting off the pedal to return to idle.

  • WOT Datalog: * Please do not perform WOT datalogs unless advised to do so.**

This datalog should capture a WOT ( W ide O pen T hrottle) pull. This should be done in a gear that will not break traction. The pedal should be completely to the floor from 2,500 RPM to 6,000 RPM. We do not recommend starting pulls lower than 2,500 RPM.

  • Cold Start Datalog: *These logs are not necessary, unless requested by calibrator*

This datalog should capture the cold start taking place. Turn the key to the ON position, but do not start the engine. Start the datalog recording, and then start the engine. The datalog can be stopped after ~3 minutes of run time.

STEP 7) Stopping the recording and saving the datalog (.csv) file - Video Time Stamp 2:57

Click the button shaped like a device with the red square on it. It is located next to the start datalogging button

Save the datalog by clicking the Save ALL button in the datalog menu.

Please save the file with the preferred naming convention.

STEP 8) Sending the datalog (.csv) file to your calibrator - Video Time Stamp 3:31

Send the datalog file as a reply to the email chain with your calibrator.

HOW TO LOAD CONFIGURATION FILE TO SCT DEVICE

You are able to datalog with the device, but we do not recommend datalogging with a device due to the lag in the data - the device does not have the processing power that the laptop has. This may hinder your tuner from being able to review the logs efficiently.


You will need to download the
Livelink Datalogging Software and the SCT Device Updater Software.

  1. Open Livelink and select Load Config from the top of the screen in the CHART GAUGES section

  2. Select and open the configuration file that you wish to load to your device. The parameters will then load into Livelink

  3. Once loaded, you will select Export DLF/DLX , select your device model and select OK

  4. Enter the description as "VMP CONFIG" and select Export

  5. Save the .DLX/.DLF file in a location on the computer's desktop

  6. Open the device updater application and select Transfer File to Device . Select Browse and open the .DLX/.DLF file that was saved on the desktop. The file will then save to your SCT device.

  7. Plug your SCT device into your vehicle and select Gauges/Datalog

  8. Select the Configuration option, and select the VMP config . This will load the gauges and parameters required to log the vehicle with the device

HOW TO IMPORT DATALOG FILE FROM SCT DEVICE

  1. Connect your SCT device to the computer and open the SCT Livelink Datalogging Program

  2. Select I want to import a datalog from a device

  3. It will prompt your to connect your SCT device to the computer - click Next

  4. Click the Check Communication button

    • If the device does not communicate, try to unplug and plug the device back into the computer and OBD2 port

  5. Once it has communicated, you will be able to click import data

  6. Save the datalog by clicking the save all button in the DATALOG section

  7. Once saved, send the datalog file as an email attachment as a response to the email chain you were working with your tuner in.

HOW TO MANUALLY BUILD A .CF4 CONFIGURATION FILE

If there are issues when loading a .CF4 configuration file, you can manually build the configuration file yourself by going through adn selecting the needed parameters.

  1. Plug SCT device into computer and OBD2 port

  2. Open the SCT Livelink Datalogging Program

  3. Select I want to datalog a vehicle

  4. Turn the key to the ON position - do not start the vehicle

  5. Select the check communication button

    • If the device and vehicle does not communicate, try to unplug and plug the device back into the computer and OBD2 port. Also note that you need to be using the USB cable that came with the SCT device.

  6. Once communication is established, click the vehicle info button in the bottom right hand corner

  7. Click the select items button and check the proper parameters for your vehicle

    • Below are screenshots of the parameters to select by vehicle year and model

NOTE: For 11-14 GT500 and 11-17 Mustang GT, you can filter the types of parameters and make many easier to find by selecting the PID button in Livelink (as shown below)

8. Click "Configure Datalog" in the bottom right hand corner of the screen

9. Save your custom configuration file for use at later times

HOW TO SETUP ANALOG WIDEBAND EQUATIONS

  1. Plug SCT device into computer and OBD2 port

  2. Open the SCT Livelink Datalogging Program

  3. Select I want to datalog a vehicle

  4. Select next in the bottom right corner (x3)

  5. Select the check communication button

    • If the device does not communicate, try to unplug and plug the device back into the computer and OBD2 port

  6. Once communication is established, click the vehicle info button in the bottom right hand corner

  7. Select select items button and check the Analog Input 8 - Orange FireWire and Analog Input 7 - Red FireWire

  8. Select the Load config button from the top of the screen in the CHART GAUGES section- select yes when asked "do you want to merge with current list available?" and browse to find the desired configuration file

    • If you don't have a configuration file, please see the "HOW TO MANUALLY SELECT DATALOGGING PARAMETERS" section of this page to see what parameters you need to select

  9. Once parameters have loaded, click the tools tab at the top of the page then click the equations button in the ANALOG section

  10. Click the green + button and enter the formula that matches your wideband

    • Formulas are wideband specific - you can typically find the equation for your specific wideband in it's user manual

    • Some common wideband equations are listed below by wideband model / part number:

        • AEM X-series 30-0300 (v*0.1621)+0.4990

        • AEM UEGO 30-4110 (v*0.13670588)+0.683

        • NGK AFX (v*0.096)+ 0.618

        • AFR500 (v*0.096)+ 0.618

        • MTX-L (v*0.20) + 0.50

  11. Highlight the formula you would like to display in your datalog and click the green arrow next to the analog Input 8 to drag your highlighted formula over.

  12. Click the home tab to return to the home page

  13. Select the list button in the ITEMS section to return to the parameter list

  14. Select the configure datalog button in the bottom right hand corner

  15. Once the screen has loaded, select the save config option in the CHARTS GAUGES section and overwrite your old datalog configuration

  16. Now your config file will include the analog data from your wideband and should display an accurate AFR reading - you can perform your requested datalogs.

HOW TO PULL .BEF FILE FROM SCT DEVICE

  1. Open the device updater application

  2. Select the Get Stock File from Device button

  3. Select Browse and save the file to your desired folder

  4. Attach the .BEF file as a response to the email that you've been working with your tuner in

HOW TO LOAD A RECOVERY FILE FROM S CT SUPPORT

STEP 1) Plug your SCT device into the computer and open the DEVICE UPDATER application.

STEP 2) Select the " AUTOMATICALLY CHECK FOR UPDATES " button

STEP 3) Once loaded, please select the UPDATE DEVICE button

*Process can take hours depending on time since last update*

STEP 4) Once device is up to date updated, please plug your device into the vehicle and return to stock when prompted.

READ AND CLEAR DTCS

What is a DTC?

A DTC or Diagnostic Trouble Code is an indicator that allows technicians to identify where and what problem exists on a vehicle.

How to Read DTCs

STEP 1 ) Plug your SCT device into the vehicle and allow the device to power on

STEP 2 ) Select the VEHICLE FUNCTIONS option, then select the READ DTC CODES Option

STEP 3) Turn the key to the ON position, but do not start the engine, Click CONTINUE

STEP 4) Take record of the codes being thrown, either by taking a photo or writing them down

STEP 1) Plug your SCT device into the vehicle and allow the device to power on

STEP 2) Select the VEHICLE FUNCTIONS option, then select the CLEAR DTC CODES Option

CRANK RELEARN

When does a crank relearn need to be performed?

Coyote:

  • Any time the engine, clutch/flywheel or transmission has been removed

GT500:

  • After a lower crank pulley removal/installation, oil pump gear removal/installation or after camshafts removal/installation


How to perform a crank relearn

STEP 1) Start the car and allow it to get to operating temperature

STEP 2) Plug your SCT device into the vehicle and allow the device to power on

STEP 3) Take a record of, and clear any codes you may have - see "READ AND CLEAR DTCS" above

STEP 4) Select the VEHICLE FUNCTIONS option, then select the SPECIAL FUNCTIONS option

STEP 5 ) Select the CRANK RELEARN option and follow on screen prompts

  • If the vehicle is not yet up to temp, it will prompt you to allow it to get to temp before performing the crank relearn

  • It will prompt you to rev the vehicle to a targeted RPM, then let off the pedal to allow it to return back to idle.

  • When successful, it will say that it has successfully performed crank relearn

KAM RESET


What is KAM? KAM stands for K eep A live M emory - this is the memory that contains all the adaptive parameters that the vehicle's ECU has learned over time, such as fuel trims, transmissions adaptive, etc.

When should a KAM Reset be performed?

A KAM reset should be performed after a mechanical issue has been fixed, such as a vacuum leak or after draining a tank of bad gas.

How to reset KAM

STEP 1) Plug your SCT device into the vehicle and allow the device to power on

STEP 2 ) Turn the key to the ON position, but do not start the engine
